A Light for Leading
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path (Psalms 119:105).
If you are walking in a group at night, and you only have one flashlight, the one with the flashlight takes the lead. The flashlight bearer has the best view of where you are and where you are going. If someone without the flashlight takes the lead, the group may not arrive at their intended destination.
The same applies to leadership. The one with the clearest view of the present situation and the best direction to move ahead is usually the best one to lead the group. -- even if that person does not hold the title of the leader.
The greatest leaders of the Bible were great, not because of their own abilities, but because they first sought God's light. Leaders like Moses, Joshua, Gideon, David, and Nehemiah all started with God's direction and followed his lead successfully.
As a leader, be sure to look for the right direction. The best way to shine the light on your path is to seek God's direction. This means reading the Bible, spending time in contemplative prayer, and seeking the counsel of godly individuals.
The most effective leadership development comes from allowing God to lead you.
