Learning, Wisdom, and Leadership
A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength (Proverbs 24:5).If you read their biographies, almost every president of the United States was an avid reader. Many of the most influential people are likewise highly educated. The connection between knowledge and leadership is important.
The Bible tells us that we should seek wisdom and knowledge because they bring power and strength. With power and strength comes influence, and influence is the key attribute of a leader. Stated in this light, the proverb could read, "A wise man has great influence over people, and a man of knowledge increases his leadership potential."
John Maxwell writes, "A leader is the one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." Notice that it begins with what the leader knows that the followers may not. The leader has directional knowledge that can influence people to use their collective knowledge together effectively.
Keep in mind that wisdom is not the same as knowledge. There are many people who have risen to high positions of leadership and have used their knowledge unwisely. The church leader caught in a sex scandal. The politician caught breaking the laws they are sworn to uphold. The CEO who cheats on shareholders. They all had knowledge, but they were unwise in the use of their influence.
Want to grow in knowledge and wisdom and expand your leadership potential? Read a wide variety of subjects. Read the classics. Read about science, politics, and philosophy. Learn how to improve your social skills. But most of all, seek God, who gives wisdom, and use your knowledge in ways that honor him.
