The Blind Leading the Blind

If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit (Matthew 15:14b).
When Jesus spoke of the blind leading the blind, it was not as much of a theological truth as it was a common understanding. He used this humorous analogy, which everyone understands is ridiculous, to describe what the Pharisees were doing every day -- leading people when they themselves were lost.

While it seems obvious that a blind man can't lead a blind man, many leaders continue to lead people even when they have no sense of direction. These leaders have a desire to lead or to maintain their position, but have no sense of direction.

Like the Pharisees, leaders who are leading blindly may go through the motions and may convince people that they should lead because of authority, persuasiveness, or charisma. But these leaders lose their passion, and the followers quickly catch on.

If you are leading and have lost your sense of direction or have lost the passion for what you are leading, start by being honest with yourself. Pray that God will give you a sense of purpose and direction. Next, admit to those you are leading that you are struggling. Genuine, transparent leaders gain the support of their followers. If you still struggle, it may be that God is calling you to something different.

Be open to God's direction -- he clearly sees the way.
